Men and CANDLES???
When I first looked at this natural gourmet candle business, I assumed it would appeal mainly to women. So I was surprised at how many guys like/love candles! In fact, a large number of our local candle customers are male. "He-man" types, even!
I was also surprised (at first) for so many men to be joining our team. Why on earth would they do such a thing? Well, let's take a look at some of these guys and what they're doing. And then at some of the candle business facts:
Retail
"Santa" (well, he sported a full white beard, and a good-size belly) told me how he is cashing in with these candles on Prince Edward Island in Canada. He said he chose to make good money in several ways.
One of the ways, of all things, is doing home parties. "Santa" said it is absolutely hilarious to see the look on women's faces when they attend a candle party and find HIM there. "What on earth are YOU doing here?!" they demand. He said he's having a great (and lucrative) time surrounding himself with women!
He also amazed me with how just how much he is making by supplying high end gift baskets to building contractors and their subcontractors. The contractors want these baskets as gifts to the New Home Buyers, a "kitchen" themed basket, "bedroom", "bath", etc. Clue: He first sold baskets with these candles to the contractors so they could gift their subcontractors' wives. That went over extremely well and led to the current New Home Buyer gift basket arrangement.
For males, as for females, the retail option is wide-open to the creative marketer.
Fundraising
A number of men pursue the fundraising option in this company. The most successful, by far, is my friend, Dave Lewis. Dave enjoys his full-time job and offers his candles and fundraisers as he goes about his regular work, as well as finding other ways to make contacts for fundraisers. These candles also got Shep Kuester's attention. First, because he could burn them with no asthmatic reaction (and he thought he hated candles!) Second, because when he ran the numbers on the company, he saw an opportunity worth grabbing. He did shows at first, lots of them, and moved an impressive amount of product.
However, from the start, Shep was crystal clear on his plan - to use the shows mainly to recruit business partners. If he at least broke even on a show, he was fine with that, because of his focus on recruiting. His focus paid off. Today Shep is leading an impressive team of distributors, and living the lifestyle he and wife Jan always wanted.
